State Childrens Health Insurance Program (formerly SCHIP, now referred to as CHIP) Expands to cover 4 million more children and pregnant women.
Whats NEW?
- 300% of the federal poverty income guideline for
a family of four is the new federal matching rate,
up from 200%.
- 21 is the new age limit, up from 19.
- Pregnant women are now covered.
- Proof of citizenship beyond social security number is no longer required.
- Five year waiting period for illegal immigrants is no longer required.
- Children covered by employer-based insurance that covers the same
services as CHIP may receive premium assistance.
- Dental insurance will be provided.
- Eligibility can now be based on gross income or adjusted gross income.
CHIP was created in 1997 to provide health insurance to low-income children through a combination of federal and state funding. The federal government authorizes the program but gives states some flexibility to mold the program to meet the needs of
the citizens in each state. |
